How To Repair PVC Water Pipe Leak

PVC pipes (polyvinyl chloride) are well-known for their long-lasting and lightweight properties, making them an environmentally friendly solution for sewage, plumbing, and irrigation. PVC pipes, typically white or cream, are connected using couplings and solvent cement, which melt

the surface layer of the pipes and bond the material together.

Repairing Damaged PVC Pipes

A damaged PVC pipe can be repaired or replaced using one of five methods, ranging from epoxy and rubber tape to hose clamps and fiberglass.

Cloth or Fiberglass Resin Tape

If you need a temporary repair for a leaking PVC pipe, fiberglass resin tape can help. Fiberglass tape simplifies repair using a water-activated resin that hardens around the pipe and slows the leaking. Clean the damaged area of the PVC pipe with a damp rag before applying the tape. Wrap the tape around the damaged area while it is still wet and allow the resin to harden for 15 minutes.

Fiberglass resin cloth can be used for a more permanent repair. Like repairing with resin tape, clean the area around the leak or damage and lightly sand the surface to increase its adhesiveness. Wrap the wound with the resin cloth. The resin hardens when exposed to sunlight or UV light.

Epoxy

Repair epoxy is a putty-like liquid or putty that is used to repair PVC pipe leaks and joints. To repair a pipe or joint with epoxy, clean and dry the damaged area, ensuring no water can reach the affected area.

If necessary, follow the manufacturer’s instructions when mixing the putty or liquid. The epoxy should then be applied and allowed to cure for ten minutes. After curing, allow water to flow through the pipe and check for leaks.

Hose Clamps and Rubber Tape

Compression, like rubber and silicone repair tape, is used to repair small leaks in PVC pipes. Wrap the affected area in rubber, separate the hose clamps and tighten them around the affected area to stop or slow the leak. Because the rubber tape and hose clamps will become ineffective as the leak grows, this is only a temporary fix.

Substitution

Sometimes a PVC pipe is too damaged to be repaired easily. If this is the case, the damaged section must be replaced with a new PVC pipe. To begin replacing the pipe, turn off the water supply to it. This can be accomplished by turning off the water at the main water supply or using a local water shutoff switch near the pipe.

Common Causes of PVC Leaks

PVC pipe repairs and replacements are typically done for the following reasons:

Improper Installation

A leak can occur if a PVC fitting is not correctly installed onto the joining pipe. This is usually the result of a loose fitting that allows water to seep through.

Wrong Adhesive Glue

Be sure to purchase the correct PVC cement to avoid premature deterioration. Before choosing a glue, read the label to ensure it is intended to adhere to PVC. Even if you use the proper glue, it will eventually deteriorate and require repair.

Conclusion

It should be noted that these fixes only apply to unpressurized plastic pipes or minor leaks. The damaged section may need to be replaced immediately for pressurized pipes or larger holes.
